Make Summer Count: Fun Learning Activities for Reno Families

Summer can be busy, especially when you’re juggling the art of making sure your kids are engaged, making memories, and having fun. Whether you’re searching for outdoor adventures, hands-on learning experiences, or free community events, Reno offers opportunities for children of every age. From library programs and STEM activities to local festivals and family-friendly entertainment, there are many ways to enjoy summer together.

Keep Learning All Summer Long

Learning can be an exciting part of summer when it’s filled with different activities that include creativity, discovery, and family fun. Summer is a great opportunity for children to discover new interests while keeping their minds active. Participating in educational activities throughout the summer can help prevent the “summer slide” while making learning feel like an adventure.

The Washoe County Library System offers a wide variety of free programs designed for children and families. Young readers can build confidence by participating in Paws 2 Read, where children can enjoy reading to therapy dogs. Families with younger children can enjoy programs like Baby Story Time and Toddler Story Time. For the older kids there’s various STEAM activities available, including educational programs about dinosaurs, exploring coding through quilt patterns, and sound and engineering. The Reno Philharmonic’s Discover Music Small Ensemble Concert and Curse of the Last Pharaoh Escape Room make for perfect interactive activities for the whole family. These special events give children an opportunity to build creativity and problem-solving skills. For more information on the different events the Washoe County libraries offer, please visit https://events.washoecountylibrary.us/calendar.

The Discovery Museum also offers exciting educational experiences throughout the summer. Families can build rockets, design flying machines, create chain reactions, invent robots, and participate in STEM Labs that bring science and creativity together. Their Small Wonder Wednesdays are especially popular with children ages 5 and under, offering a chance to come in and do engaging activities an hour before the museum even opens. For more information and new events visit the museum’s event page at https://nvdm.org/events/.

Explore Reno’s Biggest Summer Events

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy all the events the Artown Festival offers, featuring hundreds of performances, workshops, and cultural events throughout Reno.

Foodies can enjoy weekly Food Truck WTF events, which are held at different local parks. Families can try different food trucks, listen to live music, and let their kids play in the park.

If families are looking for something a little more exciting, then they won’t want to miss Hot August Nights. They will be celebrating their 40th anniversary with a variety of activities including free concerts, classic car displays, cruising events, auctions, and motorsports attractions.
