Every Day Counts: How Daily Attendance Powers Student Success at SNACS

As we open our doors for the new school year in Reno, the energy across our campus is electric. Teachers have prepped their learning centers, Interactive Choice Boards are ready, and our small school community is coming back together.

As families adjust to back-to-school morning routines, there is one factor that dramatically influences a child’s academic growth, happiness, and social confidence: showing up consistently.

Why Attendance is Unique at SNACS

In a traditional classroom, missing a day might just mean missing a worksheet. But at SNACS, our instruction is fundamentally different. Through our PLAY® model (Promoting Learning and Accountability in Youth) and personalized instruction, learning is experiential, collaborative, and hands-on.

When a student is absent, they miss out on:

  1. Interactive Learning Centers: Real-time exploration that can’t simply be recreated as makeup homework.
  2. Personalized Progress: Tailored small-group time with teachers designed specifically around their individual goals.
  3. Relational Engagement: The daily connection with peers and staff that builds a true sense of belonging and hope.

The PLAY learning model is highly effected by attendance since each student has individual educational goals to complete.

The Hidden Cost of “Chronic Absenteeism”

Did you know that missing just two days per month equals 10% of the school year? Missing 10% of the school year is known as chronic absenteeism, and it often sneaks up on families across the school year.

  • In Kindergarten & 1st Grade: Missing days early on makes it much harder to master foundational reading and math skills.
  • In Upper Elementary & Middle School: Absences frequently lead to feelings of being overwhelmed or disconnected from peer groups.

Consistency isn’t about perfection. It’s about protecting your child’s momentum and progress.

4 Practical Tips for August Success

Building strong attendance habits starting in August makes the rest of the school year significantly easier:

  1. Establish a Night-Before Routine: Lay out clothing, pack backpacks, and plan lunch before bed to reduce morning stress.
  2. Prioritize Sleep: Moving bedtime up 30-45 minutes now helps adjust sleep schedules after summer break.
  3. Schedule Appointments Outside School Hours: When possible, arrange doctor and dentist visits late in the afternoon or on school breaks. If you must schedule a doctor visit during school hours, bring a note so we can excuse the absence.
  4. Talk Positively About School: Highlight daily wins, choices, and friendships to help your child feel excited about walking through the doors each morning.

We Are Your Partners

At SNACS, we live by the motto of bringing the small school community back to the neighborhood. That means if your family is experiencing hardship, transportation issues, or health challenges, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Reach out to our family engagement team or your child’s teacher, so we can support you. Our family engagement team is always available by emailing familyengagement@snacs.org.

Let’s make this school year our best one yet by showing up for ourselves, each other, and our community every single day!
