What to Pack in Your Child’s Backpack—and What to Leave Out

A well-packed backpack can make the school day easier, more organized, and less stressful for your child. But with school supplies, homework, snacks, and personal items competing for space, it can be easy for a backpack to become overloaded.

So, what does your child actually need to bring to school each day? And what can stay at home?

Teaching children how to pack and organize their backpacks is also a great opportunity to build responsibility and independence. With a simple routine, families can help students arrive at school prepared and ready to learn.

How to Know What to Pack in Your Child’s Backpack

Every school and classroom may have different expectations, so be sure to follow your child’s teacher or school’s supply list. In general, however, these are some of the items your child may need.

Homework and Schoolwork

Homework, reading materials, folders, and important papers should have a designated place in the backpack. Encourage your child to check their backpack each evening for assignments that need to be completed and return completed work to the appropriate folder.

A simple folder system can help prevent important papers from getting crumpled or lost at the bottom of the backpack.

Essential School Supplies

Depending on your child’s grade level and classroom requirements, they may need items such as:

  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Glue sticks
  • Ruler
  • Small notebook or planner

Try to keep only the supplies your child uses throughout the day. Extra supplies can often stay at home unless the teacher requests otherwise.

A Book or Reading Material

Having a school and age appropriate book in their backpack can give your child something meaningful to read during designated reading time or other appropriate moments.

Encourage your child to choose books that match their interests. When children enjoy what they are reading, reading can become something they look forward to rather than simply another school task.

Water Bottle

A reusable water bottle can help your child stay hydrated throughout the school day. Choose one that is easy for your child to open, close, and carry.

Make sure it is labeled with your child’s name and follows the school’s guidelines.

Lunch or Snack

If your child brings food from home, pack only what they need for the school day. A reusable lunch container or snack bag can help keep food organized and prevent spills.

It can also be helpful to check your child’s lunchbox each afternoon so leftover food doesn’t remain in the backpack overnight.

Weather-Appropriate Items

Depending on the season and your school’s expectations, your child may need a jacket, hat, or other weather-appropriate items.

However, avoid turning the backpack into a storage space for every possible piece of clothing. Items that aren’t needed every day can be kept at home, in the classroom if permitted, or in another appropriate location.

What Should Stay Out of the Backpack?

Sometimes knowing what not to pack is just as important as knowing what to bring.

Too Many Toys

A favorite small toy may be comforting to your child, but toys can quickly become distractions during the school day. Unless a teacher has given permission, toys and collectibles are usually better left at home.

Unnecessary Electronics

Tablets, gaming devices, headphones, and other electronics shouldn’t make their way into your child’s backpack unless they are required or permitted by the school.

Leaving unnecessary electronics at home can help your child stay focused and reduce the chance of items being lost or damaged.

Old Papers and Trash

When was the last time you cleaned out your child’s backpack?

Old worksheets, empty snack wrappers, broken pencils, and other forgotten items can quickly take over. It is helpful to make backpack clean-outs part of your family’s weekly routine.

A few minutes of organization can make it much easier for your child to find what they need.

Unnecessary “Treasures”

Children love collecting things—and a backpack can become the perfect place to store their discoveries. Rocks, leaves, toys, stickers, and other treasures may seem harmless, but they can add unnecessary weight and clutter.

Encourage your child to keep special collections at home unless they have a specific reason to bring something to school.

Too Many Snacks

Packing extra food may seem like a good idea, but too many snacks can take up valuable space and may not align with classroom or school policies.

Check your school’s guidelines and pack an appropriate amount for your child’s schedule.

Backpacks at SNACS

Backpacks are kept lighter at Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School, since students are provided with most necessary supplies.

SNACS provides students with necessary school supplies such as:

  • Pencils and Erasers
  • Pencil Sharpeners
  • Markers
  • Rulers
  • Glue Sticks
  • A Folder

SNACS also has a library with books of all genres and for all ages. The library teaches students how to responsibly check out and return books.

Additionally, SNACS provides:

  • FREE breakfast and lunch to all students
  • Headphones and computers
  • Cubbies for students to keep backpacks, jackets, and other supplies in

Please be aware that all provided supplies are to be kept at school unless a teacher or administrator specifies otherwise.

At Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School, students benefit from learning skills that help them become confident and responsible learners. Helping your child develop simple routines at home, including what to pack in your child’s backpack, can reinforce those habits and support a successful school year.

Help Your Child Build a Backpack Routine

Rather than packing your child’s backpack for them every night, consider making it a shared responsibility.

A simple evening routine could include:

  1. Empty out lunch containers and trash.
  2. Check for homework or important papers.
  3. Put completed homework in the correct folder.
  4. Pack the materials needed for the next school day.
  5. Refill the water bottle in the morning.
  6. Check the weather and add any necessary outerwear.

This routine doesn’t have to take long. The goal is to help children learn how to prepare for their own responsibilities.

A Lighter Backpack Can Mean a More Organized School Day

Your child’s backpack doesn’t need to carry everything they own. Keeping it organized and limited to the essentials can make it easier for students to find what they need and take responsibility for their school materials.

More importantly, backpack organization is a small daily habit that can teach bigger skills such as planning ahead, staying organized, caring for belongings, and preparing for the day ahead.
