At SNACS, every student has a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP). PLPs help identify individual goals and track student progress and growth. Students and families are involved in the process, giving parents an opportunity to understand what their child is working toward.
Teachers also use assessment information to help determine appropriate learning opportunities and instructional groups. And for parents, this means your child’s learning is not treated as a one-size-fits-all experience.
Your Child Gets Choices—with Structure
The word “PLAY” might make you wonder what learning actually looks like during the school day.
At SNACS, students have opportunities to choose between standards-based learning centers during designated choice time. Teachers use PLAY® Interactive Choice Boards to organize these options.
Students can choose where they will work while still being responsible for completing required assignments, known as “Must-do’s,” within the established timeframe.
Students have a voice in their learning, but that choice comes with expectations.
This gives children opportunities to practice making decisions while remaining accountable for their schoolwork.
Play and Learning Go Together
SNACS incorporates play and exploration into learning experiences rather than treating them as being separate from academics.
The school’s learning centers are standards-based and can be differentiated based on student ability and are individualized around student interests. For your child, that can mean having different ways to engage with academic content while working toward learning expectations.
The emphasis on exploration is one of the things that makes the PLAY® model different from a classroom where every student is expected to complete the same activity in the same way at the same time.
Teachers Are There to Support Your Child
Student choice does not mean students are expected to learn everything independently.
Teachers remain actively involved throughout the learning process. During choice time, teachers will work with students in small instructional and intervention groups based on their needs.
These groups can change as students’ instructional needs change, and they allow teachers to provide targeted instruction while other students work in their learning centers.

Accountability Is Part of PLAY®
Giving students choices also means helping them understand that their choices come with responsibilities. They are expected to complete their required “Must-do’s” while making decisions about which learning centers they will work in during choice time.
This is where the “accountability” in Promoting Learning and Accountability in Youth becomes especially important.
Students are not simply choosing what they want to do. They are learning within a structured environment where they have academic responsibilities and expectations.
