Is a Charter School Right for Your Child? What Every Parent Should Know

Choosing the right school for your child can feel overwhelming, especially when you start hearing terms like ‘charter school.’ If you’re wondering what that actually means and whether it’s a good fit for your child, you’re not alone.

What is a charter school, and how do they differ from traditional public schools?

Charter schools are innovative public schools that are tuition-free and open to all students. They are independently operated, but just like all traditional public schools, they receive state funding and must follow the same academic standards. Charter schools operate with more autonomy and independence than traditional public schools, which gives them more flexibility with regard to curriculum, daily operations, and hiring practices.

Most charter schools are unique and have a specialized focus, which is only possible because of their operational freedom. They are often mission-focused and offer specialized programs such as STEM, Fine Arts, and many other unique programs. Charter schools do not charge tuition or deny admission based on academic ability. If more students apply than there are seats, admission is determined by a lottery.

What to look for in a charter school

When looking for a charter school that is the right fit for your child, it is highly recommended to take a tour of the school and ask questions about the academics and philosophies. Charter schools are independently owned, and it is important to look for how safe and stable the environment is.

Questions to ask when choosing a school

  • What is the school’s mission or philosophy, and how is that integrated into the classroom?
  • How are behavioral and discipline issues handled
  • How do the students’ test scores and graduation rates compare to the averages of the district?

In order to ensure high academic performance and standards, most charter schools are authorized and overseen by the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority (SPCSA), and many are also under local school districts as authorizers.

Why families choose charter schools

Charter schools offer a unique approach to education, with more flexibility in how students learn. These schools are a great choice for families looking for flexibility and diversity in academics, teaching methods, and overall school culture.
